Acne Scars

Every scar has a story, and not all these stories are an interesting tell. Some scars result from bravery and are worn as medals; unfortunately most others are an aftermath of acne/pimples, accidents, surgeries, burns and so on. Scars are often permanent and knowingly or unknowingly we spend so much time covering or concealing them, avoiding being clicked, not realising it is time to address the scar and evaluate the options with a Dermatologist.

Commonest Reasons for scarring

  • After pimples - these are like small, irregular pits or dents in the skin
  • Forceful and wrong extractions of blackheads, picking or popping acne increases the chances of scarring
  • Cystic, painful, deep seated acne are more notorious to scar
  • Chicken pox may lead to punched out dent-like scarring
  • Injuries or accidents
  • Scars resulting from surgical procedures

What are the different types of acne scars?

Generally a patient will have different kinds of acne scars.
When the skin is unable to produce enough collagen to fill the depression created by acne it results in pits and grooves called Atrophic Scars.

These can be of 3 types

  • Rolling Scars: The wave-like depressions that make skin look uneven and cracked. (example - sauce pan)
  • Ice pick Scars: The deep, thin and small depressions that look like open pores. (example - cone)
  • Boxcar Scars: The boxy looking, shallow, wide, oval depressions.(example - carton box)

On the other hand, when skin collagen production becomes overactive it produces excess skin tissue, gradually building upon the scars, and this is how one gets Hypertrophic Scars.
Keloids are a type of Hypertrophic Scars - These are raised, rigid, brown and bigger than the acne wounds. Keloids are common from body acne.

What is the best treatment option for acne scars?

There is no single best treatment modality, the most effective treatment is a combination of different modalities according to the scar type and skin.

Even for the same patient, different scars respond differently to technologies, and hence a customised approach is always the ONLY way forward.

At Everything Skin & Hair, we combine and customise the treatment plan according to your scars and skin type. The clinic offers a number of global, highly effective scar treatments.

Do I see results instantly?

Scars form gradually over a period of weeks and months but understandably the treatment also takes time.

Most acne scar procedures work on scar remodulation. That happens over weeks and months. On repeated sessions usually spanning 4-9 months one begins to appreciate the results.

The only exception to this is the use of dermal fillers, which may provide an almost instant improvement in certain distensible scars.

Today, all kinds of treatments are available to reduce acne scars such as-

Lasers, Medical facials, and other such Non-Surgical Treatments.

Some pointers to keep in mind

  • The patient will require more than one session, 4 to 8 sessions on an average.
  • Most sessions would have a downtime, ranging from mild redness to swelling. It is best to stay away from direct and prolonged Sun immediately after the treatment.
  • There is no immediate improvement. Effects start appearing over weeks as your skin starts to produce more collagen.
  • Discuss your timeline, expectations, apprehensions, budget - with a Dermatologist before you plan your journey.

So, let's discuss some of the most popular and effective treatments for acne scars.
