Corn & Calluses
Be kind to your feet!
Years of abuse, ill fitting footwear and lack of basic foot care may lead to development of hardened areas on the soles. The skin generally starts to thicken at the areas of excessive friction or weight bearing as a protective mechanism to form a cushion to prevent the skin from blistering. As the dead skin further gets impacted it forms a very hard centre called the nucleus of the corn which continuously impinges on the skin while walking and weight bearing.
What is a callosity/corn?
Calluses are generally due to repeated friction like on the palms when a person regularly visits the gym and has friction from the dumbbells or pull up bars.
Corns on the other hand are more serious, as they happen either due to internal bone abnormalities or ill fitting shoes. The most common areas are on the the sides of the toes, or the sole itself.
At Everything Skin & Hair, we help to manage the corns effectively.
Preventive Measures
During the initial consultation, Dr. Punit Saraogi, one of the best dermatologists in Mumbai, will be able to point out factors that may have contributed to the formation of corns.
These may involve change of footwear and sometimes wearing protective cushioned soles.
Most patients neglect their corns until it becomes very painful and are left with no choice than to visit a dermatologist.
Outsmart the corn, take measures to manage the condition more effectively.
The Dermatologist will make sure that what a person is suffering from is indeed a corn, and not a viral wart on the soles. Warts mimic corn in many ways. It's important to diagnose as warts are potentially contagious and may multiply over time.
Depending on the corn, we may recommend an initial conservative management which involves:
Paring
This is done in the clinic to remove the dead skin layer by layer. This is a painless technique where the Dermatologist will use a sterile blade to shave the outer layers of the corn.
Sounds painful?
In fact, a good job can almost instantly reduce the thickness of the corn and relieving a person of the pain while walking. Most small corns can be managed by combining paring and home care.
If in spite of all the care and corrective measures, the corn does not reduce then surgical excision is a safe and easy way.
In this, we give a shot of local anaesthetic to completely numb the corn and make the procedure painless. The corn is enucleated (with a laser or a blade).
The answer is generally YES. That's because we ignore the factors that lead to corn formation in the first place. Even after corn treatment it’s imperative to take care of the feet on a regular basis.
At Everything Skin & Hair, we understand how frustrating corns can be! So, we help to provide the best corn treatment in Mumbai to prevent recurrence.
