Ingrown toenails

Ingrown toenails is also known as Ingrown toenails Surgery

What are Ingrown toenails?

As the name suggests, Ingrown toenails occur when the edge on the toe nails (most commonly the great toe) starts to impinge and grow into the nail fold causing discomfort, pain, swelling and eventually infection.

Ingrown toe nails are notoriously recurrent unless the causative factors are eliminated.

What causes ingrown toenails?

The commonest reasons for an ingrown toenail are:

  • Repeated impact and injury
  • Ill fitting footwear
  • Imbalance between the size of the nail and the nail bed
  • Over aggressive pedicures and incorrect clipping of nails

Which nails most commonly in-grow?

The great toe nails are most notorious to in-grow. Having said that any toenail can in-grow in rare cases.

When to seek help?

A long day of feet in narrow, ill fitting footwear can cause discomfort and swelling of the nail fold. This may subside with footrest and proper foot care.

However, if the problem persists and worsens then one may need urgent medical attention, especially those who are diabetic.

We recommend seeking medical care if -

  • There is persistent pain and swelling in spite of rest
  • There is pus formation and discharge
  • The person has diabetes

What is the treatment for recurrent ingrown toenail?

In most acute cases conservative management of soaks, rest, topical and oral antibiotics, anti inflammatory medications work.

However, if the problem is recurrent then we advise a simple surgical procedure which involves the removal of a thin strip of the side of the nail under local anaesthetic followed by chemical ablation of the corresponding nail matrix (at the base of the nail). This will prevent the nail matrix to grow back into the ingrown edge again.

At Everything Skin & Hair, Dr. Punit Saraogi will help identify pre-existing triggering factors and plan an effective post surgery care to help in faster healing. Dr. Punit routinely performs this procedure at Everything Skin & Hair. It is a quick (15 minute), simple procedure.

What are the precautions after surgery?

It is advised to keep the treated leg in an elevated position for at least on the day after the surgery. It’s best to avoid excessive walking and running for 2 weeks, routine activities can be resumed from day 3. The area is cleansed during shower, and dressed at home daily for about 2 weeks.
