What is excimer laser?
It is a form of ‘targeted phototherapy’. It’s a handheld device which emits a highly specific wavelength (308nm) or Ultraviolet B (UVB). The window size is small, providing options for localised treatments without risking the adjoining skin to unnecessary exposure. This makes it possible to deliver higher energies with great safety.
Unlike conventional UVB chambers (which are good for larger body areas), an excimer is to treat recalcitrant, difficult to treat localised patches of vitiligo, psoriasis, etc.
What happens during and after the treatment?
During your session, the dermatologist will calculate how much energy has to be delivered. Excimer is like a hand-held flash light emitting blue UVB 308. The exposure to each patch is for about 10 to 40 seconds and one doesn't feel any discomfort.
Usually, the treated skin will experience some redness after a few hours of the session, and subsides over a day or two. Depending on the degree of redness, the dermatologist may decide to decrease or increase the dose of the subsequent sessions.
It’s mandatory to use sunscreen on the treated areas, and also follow the topical regime plan between two excimer sessions for best results.
